Enter a world of analog warmth, cinematic intensity, and retro-futuristic atmosphere with Doom Fortress—the debut full-length studio album from Detroit's premier instrumental synth-rock trio, Voyag3r. Originally released in 2014, this groundbreaking record instantly set the standard for the modern progressive synthwave, space rock, and horror-inspired instrumental genres.
Doom Fortress feels less like a traditional rock album and more like a lost, high-octane soundtrack to an unmade late-'70s or early-'80s midnight movie grid—dark, ominous, immersive, and endlessly replayable.
The striking, retro-tinged cover artwork and complete visual layout were illustrated by acclaimed Detroit artist, Slasher Dave.
Cult Cinema & "Rowdy" Roddy Piper History
Doom Fortress isn't just an incredible listening experience—it is a piece of independent horror-comedy cinema history. Two of the album's standout, pulse-pounding tracks—"Il Guanto Nero" and "One's True Intentions"—were officially licensed and featured prominently in the acclaimed Lovecraftian short film, Portal to Hell!. This project marks the final on-screen movie performance of professional wrestling icon and cult cinema legend "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, permanently cementing Voyag3r’s sonic footprint alongside a true pop-culture giant.
Pure Analog Audio Authenticity
To achieve maximum authenticity and spirit in capturing their signature vintage wall of sound, Voyag3r rejected modern digital convenience. Doom Fortress was tracked entirely to 2” analog tape (MCI JH-24 24-Track system) at Tempermill Studios in Ferndale, Michigan.
The entire record was tracked and mixed through various vintage pre-amps and a custom, legendary 1977 Harrison 3232 console. Using authentic vintage analog synthesizers, a driving electric guitar running through vintage tube amplification, and heavy maple shell acoustic drums, this meticulous process delivers a massive, deep-groove fidelity where you can hear every vibrant knob twiddle, tube saturation, and organic lever slide.
Critical Acclaim
“This is all analog, baby... This music did not come from a can. This doesn't sound like something someone spent two minutes tweaking around with in ProTools or GarageBand. This is a pure flashback, vintage instruments being used the right way.” — Brad Page, Popshifter
“An epic musical opus... Blending the spirit of classic film composers like John Carpenter and Fabio Frizzi with modern progressive rock energy.” — Aaron Von Lupton, Rue Morgue Magazine
Rue Morgue Magazine officially honored the album with a spectacular 4.5 out of 5 rating upon its initial release.
